Google Pixel Watch 4 May Detect Breathing Problems Before You Notice Them

Google does not appear to be planning significant design changes or internal updates for the Pixel Watch 4. However, the tech giant is expected to enhance other features of the device, notably introducing a new health functionality labeled “Breathing Emergencies.” One of the key advancements for the next Pixel Watch is continuous SpO2 monitoring, which alerts users to low blood oxygen levels. While the current Pixel Watch models include SpO2 tracking, they are limited to monitoring blood oxygen levels during sleep without real-time, hourly, or manual capabilities.

The Pixel Watch 4 aims to resolve these shortcomings by providing continuous SpO2 monitoring and alerts when detected levels fall below a certain threshold. This addition could serve as a competitive edge for Google, particularly since more recent Apple Watch models sold in the US do not feature blood oxygen monitoring due to a patent dispute. If regulatory approvals are necessary for this feature, Google may initially release it in the US and later expand availability to additional markets. There is also a potential impact on battery life with continuous SpO2 monitoring; however, the Pixel Watch 4 is rumored to have larger battery cells, which could mitigate this issue.

Early leaks suggest that this next-generation smartwatch could offer up to 72 hours of battery life. In addition to health features, it is reported that the Pixel Watch 4 may offer Emergency Satellite Communications. Though specific details are sparse, the watch could potentially reach emergency services via satellite in areas without network coverage. As Apple Watches with LTE already provide similar functionality, this feature could set Google apart from other Android smartwatch offerings.

Alternatively, the watch may integrate with the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10’s Satellite SOS feature, enhancing its emergency capabilities significantly.
