Camera experts Hasselblad and smartphone manufacturer Oppo have confirmed the continuation of their collaboration, which has previously produced co-developed camera systems for devices like the Oppo Find X8 Ultra and the Oppo Find N5 folding phone. This announcement was made during an event in Hasselblad’s hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden, hinting at exciting advancements in their partnership. Together, they are developing a “next-generation mobile imaging system” aimed at establishing new standards for quality and experience in mobile photography.
Pete Lau, Oppo’s chief product officer, expressed his enthusiasm by stating that this collaboration will help push the limits of mobile imaging even further while maintaining Hasselblad’s distinctive color profile and image quality. While the ongoing collaboration between Hasselblad and Oppo is thrilling for smartphone photography enthusiasts, it raises questions regarding the status of Hasselblad’s previous partnership with OnePlus. With Oppo and OnePlus being closely connected, the lack of mention of OnePlus in the recent announcements is puzzling.
Notably, OnePlus had initially teamed up with Hasselblad in March 2021, before Oppo’s partnership was formed in February 2022. The two brands confirmed a shared integration of resources in June 2021, further blending their incidents. There are growing concerns regarding the fate of the OnePlus and Hasselblad collaboration, as speculation suggests that OnePlus may not continue to work with Hasselblad moving forward.
Recent rumors indicate that the upcoming OnePlus 15 might feature an “independent image brand.” This uncertainty, especially amidst ongoing discussions surrounding OnePlus’ camera direction without a prominent camera brand, leaves an interesting dynamic in the smartphone market. In the meantime, the OnePlus 13 is generating buzz as an impressive device, featuring a sleek design, an expansive 6,000mAh battery, and a capable camera system, making it a formidable contender for 2025’s smartphone landscape.
