Nintendo Switch 2 launched successfully with several high-profile games, including Street Fighter 6, Sid Meier’s Civilization 7, and Fortnite. This has led many gaming enthusiasts to speculate about the arrival of other significant third-party titles and live-service games on the platform. However, developers are facing hurdles in acquiring development kits for the new system, as highlighted by Digital Extremes, the creators of the popular sci-fi multiplayer shooter Warframe.
At TennoCon 2025, Digital Extremes showcased a new expansion for Warframe, along with their upcoming fantasy title, Soulframe. During the event, the team discussed the possibility of bringing Warframe to the Switch 2. While the game currently enjoys updates on the original Switch, Digital Extremes noted that they have not yet received a development kit for the new console.
This absence is preventing them from starting the porting process. Obtaining a development kit is vital for any studio seeking to transition their game to a new platform. While older consoles make it easier for developers to acquire these kits, Nintendo is traditionally restrictive when it comes to granting access for new systems.
Reports indicate developers have been increasingly frustrated by this limitation, with Digital Extremes being no exception. Despite their long-standing partnership with support studio Panic Button, CEO Steve Sinclair confirmed the studio’s interest and excitement in bringing Warframe to Switch 2, but lamented the lack of a dev kit. Sinclair expressed optimism about the eventuality of a Switch 2 port, stating that once they secure a kit, they will create a custom build for Warframe.
In the meantime, players can still enjoy the original version on the Switch. Warframe is also available on multiple platforms, including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and iOS, with an Android version in development. An expansion titled The Old Peace is set to be launched by the end of 2025.
