Samsung Unveils Innovations Behind the Slimmer Design of the Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 7

Samsung has finally achieved a significant milestone in the smartphone market. The company has introduced a book-style foldable smartphone that is as thin and light as conventional slab smartphones, something that Chinese competitors have been accomplishing for years. The new Galaxy Z Fold 7 is merely 8.9mm thick when folded, making it comparable to the Google Pixel 9 Pro, a traditional model.

When unfolded, it boasts a thickness of just 4.2mm. Additionally, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 has managed to reduce its thickness by nearly 10%. The company attributes these advancements to several technical improvements.

A recent post from Samsung provided insights into the innovations that contributed to the slim profiles of the new foldables. Among the breakthroughs are a new hinge mechanism, a redesigned display panel, and a smaller camera module. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 features Samsung’s third-generation Armour FlexHinge, which is notably 27% thinner and 43% lighter than the hinge used in the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Internally, the hinge employs updated alloy components and a wider wingplate that supports both the cover and inner displays while minimizing the crease on the inner screen. Additionally, Samsung has restructured the display panel, possibly removing the digitizer layer used for S Pen input, as the Z Fold 7 no longer supports the S Pen, leading to a slimmer design. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 also benefits from a new, slimmer FlexHinge, which is 29% thinner than its predecessor.

Both devices feature redesigned camera modules that use smaller actuators without compromising autofocus performance. These changes have enabled Samsung to produce the lightest foldable phone currently available. The Galaxy Z Fold 7, equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor, showcases a 200MP camera and enhanced durability features.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 boasts impressive specs, including the largest 4.1-inch edge-to-edge FlexWindow and a flagship-level 50MP camera. Thus, it’s clear that Samsung has responded to customer demands for a thinner, more capable foldable device. Early pre-orders indicate that consumers are excited about the new features and design.
