Google has invested significant effort into promoting RCS messaging as the new standard, particularly targeting Apple in a high-profile campaign a few years ago. Now that more users are adopting RCS, Google is focused on refining the experience to eliminate existing issues. RCS has improved over time, incorporating new features that will eventually enable end-to-end encryption between Android and iPhone devices. Recently, there are reports that some users can edit RCS messages sent to iPhones from Android devices, which is an exciting development.
However, this feature appears to be in its early stages and may still be undergoing testing. Although you can attempt to access it if you’re interested, it’s likely not worth the effort at this point, given its incomplete functionality. If you do want to try it out, ensure that the iPhone user is operating on iOS 18.5 or the latest beta version. When you edit a message, the issue arises on the recipient’s side, where the iPhone user receives a new message rather than an edited one.
Another limitation is that iPhone users cannot edit any RCS messages sent from Android. Considering these shortcomings, it may not be the best time to explore this feature fully. Nevertheless, it does hold promise for enhancing communication between Android and iPhone users. As for the future, the upcoming version of iOS may address these issues, particularly with the anticipated introduction of end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging.
While this could resolve several current limitations, the overall experience with Google Messages and RCS still has room for improvement. Currently, it depends heavily on carrier support for reliability, and there is no straightforward method to transfer messages between devices. Despite Google’s initiatives, RCS is still in its early stages and has a long journey ahead.
