Huawei continues to innovate in the realm of mobile photography with the introduction of the Pura 80 Ultra, its most ambitious and unconventional model to date. Recently announced in China, Huawei has confirmed that the Pura 80 Ultra will be available globally, prompting a closer examination of its standout features.
At the back of the Pura 80 Ultra, one of the most notable aspects is the configuration of its telephoto lenses. Within the large camera housing, there are two telephoto lenses that share a single motorized prism, which alternates between the lenses.
This design allows for both 3.7x and 10x zoom capabilities without relying on separate sensors for each lens. This innovative approach aims to enhance consistency in color and contrast across photos taken at different zoom levels.
The specifications can be a bit perplexing, as the two telephoto lenses utilize the same sensor. Photos taken at a 3.7x zoom capture images at 50 megapixels, while the 10x zoom options result in 12.5MP images, each with differing apertures.
It appears that digital processing and sensor cropping contribute to the quality of the 10x photos. Additionally, the device features a 50MP main camera and a 40MP wide-angle camera.
The choice to use a single sensor for the telephoto functionality likely helps conserve space within the device, enabling the inclusion of a robust 5,170mAh battery that supports both 100W fast charging and 80W wireless charging. Despite its compact thickness of 8.3mm, the Pura 80 Ultra weighs 233 grams, indicating there hasn’t been significant weight reduction.
Other impressive specs involve a 6.8-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 16GB of RAM, storage options of either 512GB or 1TB, and a 13MP selfie camera. The phone offers a robust body with excellent water and dust resistance ratings, enhanced by durable Crystal Armor Kunlun Glass.
While Huawei has not disclosed the specific processor used, reports from its Chinese launch suggest it may feature the Kirin 9020 chip. Although Huawei tends to launch its devices globally, a U.S. release appears unlikely.
Pricing and an exact release date have yet to be announced. Upon its arrival, the Pura 80 Ultra is expected to compete with leading Android camera phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and Xiaomi 15 Ultra.
