Chrome for Android Unintentionally Offers New Method for Searching AI Results

Google has recently begun integrating its new AI Mode into various products, signaling a strategic push to enhance user engagement. Initially unveiled at the I/O event, this AI-powered assistant is now making its way to Android and Pixel devices, with its first appearance in Chrome’s beta version specifically for Android. Mishaal Rahman, a noted tech detective, discovered that Chrome Beta version 139.0.7258.32 features several redesigned new tab pages.

The standout addition is a prominent AI Mode shortcut located right below the search bar, emphasizing Google’s intent to steer users toward the AI assistant rather than traditional blue-link search results. Rahman observed two different designs on separate Android devices that were running the same beta. On one device, the new AI Mode button was apparent, accompanied by repositioned Lens and voice search icons just beneath the search bar.

This version also saw the return of an older G logo and a shift in placeholder text to “Search Google or type URL.”

Meanwhile, the second device presented a more conventional look, with the absence of the AI Mode button and the G logo. Instead, it featured a shortcut for Incognito Mode next to the Lens and voice search icons, indicating that Google is conducting A/B testing on these layouts, likely adjusting them based on individual account settings. Though the feature hasn’t been rolled out widely yet, the evidence suggests a significant development.

Reports indicate that a similar AI Mode shortcut is being trialed for the desktop version of Chrome’s new tab page. With over 60% of the global browser market share, incorporating AI Mode into Chrome could be a pivotal strategy for Google to retain its user base against competitors like ChatGPT and Perplexity. While it’s not available for everyone at the moment, the integration of AI Mode into Chrome appears to be inevitable.
