A long-awaited feature is finally being rolled out to the Google Contacts app, several months after its initial discovery. After installing the latest update, users can now access their recent call history directly from a contact card in Google Contacts.
This new addition, first spotted in late April, integrates the Contacts app with calling and messaging apps. It introduces a “Recent Activity” section to contact cards, displaying details of the last call and a brief snippet of the last text message exchanged with that contact.
Users can quickly navigate to the relevant app by tapping on either piece of information, making it a handy shortcut. This feature builds upon the single contact widgets Google introduced a few months ago and effectively consolidates information across different Google applications.
To utilize this new feature, users must grant appropriate permissions through the Organize tab in Google Contacts, and ensure they have the latest version of the app. While the rollout has begun, it might not yet be available in every region or device.
This integration is a significant enhancement, as it centralizes data from various apps into one convenient area. Google has been making impressive strides with the Contacts app over the past year, introducing features like VIP status for selected contacts, customizable emojis and memojis for photos, and many improvements that streamline syncing with Google’s services.
The company aims to transform Contacts into an all-in-one solution for communication. Although many users may still rely on dialer and messaging apps, the renewed focus on Contacts is encouraging and adds value to an app that had become somewhat overlooked.
As a result of these updates, users may find themselves exploring features they previously ignored, making the Google Contacts app a more useful tool in their daily communication.
