Samsung’s Foldable Devices Experience a Renaissance, Poised for Strong Pre-Order Numbers

Samsung’s recent release of the Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 in 2024 did not meet expectations, largely due to the lack of significant upgrades and a $100 increase in price compared to their predecessors. The limited improvements likely contributed to consumer reluctance, especially amid growing competition in the foldable market. Recognizing the need for innovation, Samsung has shifted its focus to the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 models.

The new foldable devices have generated excitement with promising enhancements. The Z Flip 7 now features an edge-to-edge cover display with a remarkable 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 2,600 nits. Meanwhile, the Z Fold 7 aims to minimize the visible crease and boasts a sleek design comparable to standard smartphones.

These upgrades may be the reason why the previous generation’s lack of appeal led to lower sales. Analysts from Korea’s The Fact report that the new foldables have the potential to break pre-order records previously set by the Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5, which had impressive sales. The earlier success was attributed to the Z Flip 5’s larger cover display and the Z Fold 5’s innovative hinge design.

The excitement surrounding the Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 is bolstered by over 160,000 individuals registering for pre-order notifications prior to the official announcement. Expectations are also high for sales in Western markets, especially considering the positive early impressions of these devices. Samsung is backing their new offerings with attractive incentives like a free 512GB storage upgrade and trade-in credits up to $1,000.

As these advancements catch attention, consumers are left wondering whether they should jump on the pre-order train or wait for more detailed reviews to be released. What do you think about Samsung’s latest foldables? Have you already made a decision to pre-order?
