At the start of the year, Pixel 4a users were taken by surprise when Google sent out an email announcing a new update for their devices. Even though official support for the Pixel 4a had ceased years earlier, this update was touted as a means to enhance battery stability and performance.
However, the outcome was far from favorable; many users noticed a significant decline in battery life and slower charging speeds. This situation left long-time users facing an unwanted disruption in their experiences.
Despite some attempts to delay the installation, the update is now reportedly being rolled out to all Pixel 4a devices, as shared by users on platforms like Reddit. While the necessity for the update is understood, many users are understandably disappointed, given that they had been managing their phones without any significant issues.
It’s a stark reminder of how a single update can drastically alter device performance. On a brighter note, Google has extended some options for affected users.
In certain regions, those struggling with the decreased battery performance can avail themselves of a free battery replacement. For users seeking alternatives, Google is also providing a monetary compensation of either $50 or a $100 credit toward purchasing a new Google phone.
While these choices are available, there is a deadline for making decisions, set for January 8, 2026. Interestingly, the Pixel 6a is facing similar challenges, as it is also part of the Battery Performance Program.
The firmware updates affecting battery performance will roll out only after users have completed 400 charge cycles. For those who are still under that limit, there’s currently no need for concern.
As Google continues to prioritize user safety through battery regulations, one wonders which devices may be next in line for updates and changes.
