Google Fi has recently announced support for data-only eSIMs on laptops, allowing users to access mobile data without needing a smartphone. This update was quietly rolled out, and it became apparent through modifications in Google Fi’s support documentation. Data-only SIMs are available for free to subscribers on certain plans and can be used on various devices across more than 200 countries. This enhancement means that users can utilize Fi’s cellular network directly without having to connect to their Android phone as a hotspot.
While Google Fi may not be the ideal choice for everyone, it does provide significant savings for some users. A recent update to Google’s support page highlighted this change. Previously titled “How to add Google Fi to tablets,” the page now indicates that both tablets and laptops are eligible for data-only eSIM connections. However, the update does not specify which laptop models are supported; it is assumed that most modern devices that can download an eSIM will work, including tablets.
Users whose devices do not support eSIM can still opt for a free physical SIM. The eSIMs, both physical and digital, incur no additional charges for Fi subscribers on either the Flexible or Unlimited Premium plans. However, users on the Unlimited Standard or Unlimited Essentials plans will not have access to data-only SIMs. While these SIMs can support data across multiple devices, tethering from connected devices is currently not permitted.
Interestingly, this new support for laptops was not mentioned in Google’s recent blog post about changes to Fi plan tiers, which focused mainly on Android tablets and iPads. Overall, this update represents a significant improvement for users who require mobile connectivity while traveling or working remotely.
