Netflix has introduced a new dialogue-only subtitle option, starting with the final season of its acclaimed series “You.” This latest feature is available for streaming now, allowing viewers to enjoy a less cluttered reading experience.
In contrast to standard closed captions, these dialogue-only subtitles display only the spoken words, eliminating sound effects and other audio cues. The final season of “You,” comprising ten episodes, marks the conclusion of a gripping narrative that first captured audiences in 2018.
As Netflix rolls out this high-profile feature, it aims to enhance the viewing experience by providing subtitles that minimize distractions. This comes alongside recent experiments by the streaming service, which includes testing more personalized show recommendations based on specific search terms and even viewer moods.
According to a blog post from Netflix, starting with the fifth season of “You,” users will have two options for subtitles: regular English subtitles and English (CC) subtitles. This distinction clarifies the difference between standard subtitles, which present only spoken dialogue, and closed captions that incorporate additional information, such as sound effects and speaker identification.
Previously, Netflix users seeking subtitles in the original language only had access to closed captions. While these captions are invaluable for viewers who are hard of hearing or wish to maintain low volume levels, the new dialogue-only option is ideal for those who prefer to see just the spoken dialogue.
This feature is set to be included in all upcoming Netflix original content across various languages that currently provide closed captions. In the case of “You” season 5, the dialogue-only subtitles are already available in multiple languages, including English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, and European Spanish, broadening access to a distraction-free viewing experience.
