This New Dongle Is a Clone of the Discontinued Chromecast with Google TV

Thomson has introduced the Cast 150, a streaming device reminiscent of the Chromecast with Google TV. This innovative device supports 4K streaming, as well as Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, enhancing the viewing experience for users. Notably, it features a dedicated Live TV button.

However, the pricing and availability of the Cast 150 in the US remain uncertain, as sales seem to be currently focused in Europe. The launch comes on the heels of Google’s discontinuation of the popular Chromecast with Google TV last year, which was succeeded by the higher-priced Google TV Streamer, designed to resemble a conventional set-top box. The original Chromecast with Google TV (4K) offered excellent features and performance at an affordable price of $50, while the new Google TV Streamer is priced nearly twice as high.

The Cast 150, as reported by 9to5Google, closely resembles the original Chromecast. It retains the same pebble-like dongle design and sleek white finish. Like its predecessor, the Cast 150 connects directly into a TV’s HDMI port and is powered via USB-C.

Equipped with a quad-core Cortex-A35 processor, the Cast 150 boasts up to 2GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. It also supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi networks, ensuring a robust streaming experience. A unique feature of Thomson’s remote is the inclusion of a “Live TV” button, aligning with Google’s initiative for quicker access to live TV content.

This trend is seen in other recent devices, including Walmart’s Onn Google TV 4K Pro. The main challenge surrounding the Cast 150 is its unclear pricing and availability. Reports indicate that it is already on sale in parts of Europe, but it’s uncertain when or if it will reach the US market.

Given Thomson’s European focus, it is possible the device may not officially arrive stateside. Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
