Google is set to enhance its Gboard with a more rounded key design, replacing the traditional rectangular keys with new pill-shaped ones. This change will give users the flexibility to choose between rectangular, rounded, or borderless styles. The update is expected to debut at the upcoming Google I/O event next month. The announcement of this redesign emerged last month, sparking a mixed reaction from users during a beta A/B test of Gboard.
While some users welcomed the aesthetic change, others expressed their discontent. According to a report from Android Authority, users who prefer the classic look will have the option to revert to the old design via an in-app banner upon first encountering the new keys. An analysis of the Gboard APK indicated that the update would introduce not only the new key shapes but also an iOS-inspired swipe gesture for entering numbers and symbols. The included banner will allow users to dismiss the notification and access a settings menu to switch back to the previous design if desired.
This approach strikes a balance between exposing more users to the updated look while catering to those who prefer the traditional style. Experts anticipate that the rounded keys will roll out as part of Google’s new Material 3 Expressive design language, which is expected to be revealed following Google I/O. The developer conference, occurring shortly, may provide a comprehensive overview of the refreshed design language, as it has been some time since Android received a significant visual update. More clarity on these changes will likely emerge by May 20.
