Google TV has recently introduced a new setup process that eliminates the need for the Google Home app on select Hisense TVs. This update marks a significant shift in the installation procedure, as it allows for a more streamlined experience reminiscent of Apple’s setup process for its devices. The initial models to benefit from this change are Hisense’s 2025 U7 and U8 Google TVs.
Previously, users were required to manually open the Google Home app to set up their Google TV devices. The new setup method simplifies this process; when a compatible Hisense TV is powered on, nearby Android phones will automatically receive a setup notification. Additionally, the TV will display a QR code that users can scan with either an Android or iOS device to initiate the setup, eliminating the need for any app installation.
Currently, this upgraded workflow is exclusive to Hisense’s 2025 U7 and U8 models, which are positioned in the premium price range, starting at $1,299.99 for the 55″ U7 model. However, Google has indicated plans to expand this setup experience to more Google TV devices in the future. Later this year, Google TV’s new setup method will be rolled out to additional devices, including “select” Onn streaming boxes, although a complete list of compatible devices has not been provided.
This process is expected to function similarly to Apple’s intuitive setup for the Apple TV. By bringing an iPhone or iPad close to the new device, users can complete the installation effortlessly on their handheld devices. The QR code serves as a convenient backup option for those who may encounter issues with the automatic setup process.
