One UI 8 Enhances Multitasking Capabilities on Galaxy Smartphones

Samsung is set to introduce a new 12GB RAM Plus option with the upcoming One UI 8 upgrade, an improvement from the 8GB maximum available in One UI 7. This enhancement in virtual RAM aims to improve app efficiency without the need for physical RAM upgrades. The increase in virtual RAM capacity is particularly significant given the constrained physical RAM in high-end Galaxy smartphones.

The RAM Plus feature functions by designating a segment of the device’s internal storage to act as virtual RAM. This enables background apps to operate more efficiently, reducing the need to reload them when switching between applications. One UI 8 will bring an upgrade to this feature, offering users a new maximum of 12GB of virtual RAM, which is expected to help alleviate the resource demands on Samsung devices known for their hefty memory requirements.

It’s essential to understand that virtual RAM differs from physical RAM, primarily because it relies on storage space, which is considerably slower than dedicated memory chips. However, its advantage lies in its ability to keep more applications active in the background, resulting in a smoother experience when multitasking. Given Samsung’s somewhat conservative approach to physical RAM in its flagship models, like the Galaxy S25 Ultra which comes with 12GB of physical RAM, this boost in virtual RAM could help bridge the gap.

With the upcoming One UI 8, users will find options for 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, and now 12GB of virtual RAM allocation. Users with mid-range devices may prefer to opt for lesser amounts, while those with 512GB or more storage can fully utilize the upgrade without concerns. Currently, One UI 8 is in the early development phase and is not projected to start rolling out until late this year, with a broader release likely extending into the next year.

Newer devices, such as the Galaxy S25 series and the Fold and Flip models, are expected to be the first to receive this update.
