New Google Drive Feature Helps You Stay Ahead of Information Overload Effortlessly

Google Workspace has introduced a new feature called “Catch me up” in its Gemini AI side panel for Google Drive. This feature, which was unveiled last summer, enhances how users can stay updated on their documents.

It allows users to quickly access a high-level overview of any changes—such as edits and comments—made in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides since their last visit, applicable to both individual documents and multiple files. The rollout is currently taking place for eligible Google Workspace and Google One AI Premium subscribers, particularly in English.

This tool is especially beneficial for teams, students, and anyone who frequently collaborates on shared documents. In addition to the “Catch me up” feature, the Gemini AI side panel is designed to improve user experience across various Google Workspace applications.

For instance, in Google Docs, it assists with writing and refining text, while in Gmail, it can summarize email threads, suggest replies, and locate specific information from the inbox. This functionality also extends to Google Drive, enabling users to analyze documents quickly and obtain essential information.

Furthermore, back in March, Google introduced contextual chips in Google Drive meant to provide users with quick shortcuts for integrating common workflows. These nudges appear as clickable options on the Drive homepage and within folders, facilitating access to tasks like summarizing folders or learning more about specific files.

The “Catch me up” tool aims to streamline document updates by displaying important changes in a concise manner. When accessed through a Nudge chip, it presents an overview of updates across documents, while its dedicated icon allows users to focus on changes within a specific file since the last access.

The feature is currently rolling out over a period of up to 15 days and is available for customers on specific Google Workspace plans.
