Google is introducing a new AI Mode shortcut in the Pixel Launcher, embedding it directly into the home screen’s search bar. This change makes AI Mode, powered by the sophisticated Gemini 2.0, a constant feature for many users. The aim of this tool is to enhance the Google Search experience by making it more conversational and interactive, allowing for detailed answers and follow-up questions. Unlike the customizable shortcut available in the Google app, the version on the Pixel Launcher is not optional for users upgrading to Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1.1.
The confirmation of its presence in the upcoming stable Android 16 rollout remains uncertain. The Pixel Launcher’s search bar is more than just another widget; it is a central feature of the Pixel home screen experience. Always accessible, it appears as the first thing users see upon unlocking their devices and stays fixed at the bottom of each home screen page and at the top of the app drawer. This search bar, while similar to that of the Google app’s Search widget, distinguishes itself with dynamic theming that aligns with home screen icons and offers a more streamlined layout.
Historically, the launcher’s search bar had featured only the Google logo and voice search icon until the addition of a dedicated Google Lens icon in September 2021. Despite this, its overall design has remained consistent. With this prominent placement, Google is positioning the search bar as prime digital real estate to promote its new AI Mode. AI Mode is designed to provide users with relevant information across the web in a conversational manner, allowing for follow-up questions that facilitate deeper understanding.
As of now, it appears that users of Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1.1 will have access to the new AI Mode shortcut. However, for those who prefer to forgo this feature, there seems to be no option to disable it entirely. The rollout of this AI search mode started as an opt-in feature and is expected to become widely available. Whether or not the shortcut will be included for stable Android 16 users is still unclear as the release approaches.
