Google Wallet has evolved significantly over the past year, moving from a basic banking card storage application to a versatile platform that accommodates various digital assets. Users can now store transit passes, loyalty cards, gift cards, event tickets, and even digital IDs within the app. One of the most useful features is the ability to store essential identification documents like driver’s licenses, state-issued IDs, and passports.
This innovation enhances security and convenience, enabling users to carry vital documents without the risk of losing them or having them stolen. The rollout of digital IDs is expanding across the United States, with states like Iowa recently gaining access to this feature. Initially announced in September 2024, digital ID support is finally becoming available, allowing users to easily add their IDs to Google Wallet.
Following Iowa, Arkansas, Montana, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia are also slated to receive digital ID support, with expectations for their rollout by early 2026. To check if digital ID support is available in Iowa, users can open the Google Wallet app and tap the “Add to Wallet” button, selecting the option for IDs to find their state. While only six states currently support digital IDs in Google Wallet, the functionality provides users with a modern approach to carrying identification.
The process generally involves scanning the ID document and verifying personal information, likely including facial recognition for security.
