Samsung is intensifying its efforts in the digital wallet space by announcing support for Mercedes-Benz digital car keys, set to launch in July 2025. This marks a significant move in its strategy to catch up with Google Wallet, which already offers digital car key support for several automotive brands. With this update, Galaxy smartphone users will be able to lock, unlock, and start select Mercedes-Benz vehicles directly from their devices. This functionality eliminates the need to take the phone out of their pocket.
Utilizing Bluetooth Low Energy and emerging ultra-wideband technology, Samsung’s digital keys will provide secure access to a car’s ignition, locks, and location, addressing the growing expectation for advanced features among premium car buyers. Samsung’s announcement aligns with its ongoing mission to compete in the automotive digital key market. Though late to this aspect of the game, the company has been steadily expanding its partnerships with various automakers. Presently, it supports digital keys for brands such as BMW, Mini, Audi, and the Hyundai Group, which includes Kia and Genesis.
Recently, Samsung also introduced support for Volvo and Polestar, though regional and model restrictions apply. Woncheol Chai, Samsung’s Executive Vice President and Head of the Digital Wallet Team, expressed excitement about providing Mercedes-Benz drivers with the convenience of Samsung Digital Key access. Unlike the limited availability of Volvo and Polestar keys, the Mercedes-Benz integration is expected to attract broader interest, pending the release of details concerning supported models. Launched in June 2022, Samsung Wallet is a crucial component of the company’s mobile ecosystem, storing various digital assets securely.
With features like biometric and PIN authentication, users can protect access to their vehicles. As digital keys transition from novelty to necessity, Samsung aims to establish Galaxy phones as indispensable for automobile users. The Mercedes-Benz Digital Key will be accessible in select regions worldwide starting July 2025.
