Sonos has decided to cancel its streaming box project, referred to as Pinewood, as it shifts its focus back to its core audio products. This decision comes in the aftermath of a challenging year for the company, which faced significant backlash over a poorly received app redesign. The redesign was so unpopular that it raised eyebrows when Sonos’ chief product officer, Maxime Bouvat-Merlin, described it as requiring “courage.” In light of this and its struggles, it seems wise for Sonos to reassess and concentrate on what originally made it a desired brand.
Over the past year, Sonos has faced numerous challenges. The app redesign alienated many users, removing beloved features like “Shuffle All” and alarm functionality. Instead of truly addressing these issues, Sonos contemplated launching an Android-based streaming box, thinking it would help people forget the troubles of 2024. However, in a market already filled with formidable streaming devices from industry leaders like Google, Apple, and Roku, the question arises: where would this new product fit?
Fortunately, the company’s leadership is taking a more prudent approach. An internal announcement revealed the temporary pause of the streaming video player project by interim CEO Tom Conrad during an “all-hands call.” This pause does not equate to a total abandonment of the Pinewood project, but it emphasizes the need for the company to prioritize its core strengths. As Sonos turns its attention back to audio products, fans of the brand hope it remains dedicated to innovation in sound technology.
Recent releases, such as the Sonos Ace headphones and the Sonos Arc soundbar, demonstrate the company’s commitment to high-quality audio experiences. Ultimately, consumers are more interested in enhancing their audio setups than in investing in a new streaming box that overlaps with existing functionalities.
