Android 14 Update Enhances Your Old Chromecast Experience Significantly

Google has officially begun rolling out the Android 14 update for Chromecast devices with Google TV. This update not only upgrades the operating system from Android 12 to Android 14 but also includes the security patch updated until January 2025, alongside enhancements to system stability.

The rollout is occurring in stages, meaning that the new build may not be available to all users immediately. The update, identified as build UTTC.241218.004, varies in size depending on the specific Chromecast model, weighing approximately 743MB to 809MB.

It introduces improvements such as support for the Find My Remote feature of the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote, as well as customizable buttons. While this update is significant, users should temper their expectations regarding substantial new user-facing features, especially considering the aging hardware within these Chromecast devices.

This update could potentially mark the final major software enhancement for older Chromecast models. Following this release, it is likely that Google will focus on providing only security patches and bug fixes, rather than introducing new functionalities.

With the launch of the more robust Google TV Streamer, the company seems poised to concentrate its resources on improving this newer device while phasing out support for earlier Chromecast models. Additionally, Google has ceased sales of Chromecast with Google TV, further signaling a shift in priorities.

According to Google’s support timeline, the 4K Chromecast will continue to receive security updates until the end of September 2025, while the Chromecast HD is expected to receive firmware updates until September 2027. Notably, this marks the second update for Chromecast this year, with a previous update occurring at the start of 2025 that also increased the security patch level.
