Android 16 Beta 3 has officially launched, indicating the entry of the platform into its stability phase. This release primarily targets app developers, incorporating new tools that enhance app functionality. Additionally, it introduces user-friendly features like a text outline to assist individuals with low vision and Auracast support for Bluetooth audio. The rollout of Android 16 has been progressing well since the Beta program commenced in January.
Google previously stated that the latest version would reach its platform stability phase by March, and they have delivered on that promise with the release of Beta 3 today. This version solidifies all app-related behaviors, providing developers with a definitive understanding of how their applications will function with the final stable version later this year. In the lead-up to this release, Google informed users via their Android Developers account on social media. The previous beta versions have mainly focused on improvements for app developers.
For instance, Beta 1 included enhancements aimed at making applications more flexible across various device displays, while Beta 2 introduced significant backend updates for camera functionality. Beta 3 continues this trend with additional developer tools, such as a feature that allows testing of Local Network Protection, which will grant users more autonomy regarding which apps can access devices on their local networks in future Android releases. The update also brings notable user-centric features like the inclusion of text outlines for better accessibility and Auracast, which allows multiple compatible audio devices to connect and tune in to shared audio. Auracast aims to enhance the audio experience in public settings, ensuring users can hear essential information and entertainment clearly.
Starting today, Android 16 Beta 3 is available for devices eligible for the beta program, including Pixel phones from the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro onward. Existing beta users will receive the update automatically, while new users can enroll in the program to experience the latest features.
