Android 16 Beta 3 has revealed some code indicating a potential new feature for notification summaries. This feature might allow users to customize their notifications by excluding certain apps or completely disabling the summary function, giving users more control over their notifications. This new development comes at a time when Apple’s AI tools seem to be struggling to gain traction with users. Despite ongoing marketing efforts, many are not impressed with the offerings, such as the Genmoji feature.
Additionally, Apple’s next-generation Siri has been delayed, indicating challenges within their AI initiatives. The concerns grow as it appears that Google may be borrowing from Apple’s controversial notification summary feature, which was introduced in iOS 18. The latest Android 16 Beta 3 release may not introduce many visible changes, but it signifies progress toward a full launch expected in June. Previous builds contained hidden functionalities, and this one is no different.
Reports suggest that Google is developing a method for summarizing missed notifications, potentially using AI to compile updates from various chats and alerts. Fortunately, these reports also indicate options for users to manage their settings, allowing them to opt-out of notification summaries if they prefer a more traditional experience. I have reservations about this feature, especially since my experience with Apple’s notification summaries on the iPhone 16 Pro Max was disappointing. However, I hold onto hope that Google will navigate this feature better, given its history of handling notifications more effectively.
The assurance of a toggle switch to turn off summaries is also welcome news, as it reflects an understanding of user preferences. While it’s possible that these notification summaries could appear in the next beta, they might also be reserved for a more significant reveal at Google I/O. Given the hints from recent discussions regarding upcoming user interface changes, there is anticipation around potential announcements in May.
