Google and Samsung Unveil Auracast’s Broadcast Audio for Your Smartphone Experience

Android 16 is nearing a stable release, with the recent Beta 3 update enhancing platform stability. Google’s efforts have included several quality-of-life improvements, making this update noteworthy. One major addition is the support for Auracast, which has been confirmed for Android 16, Android 15, and Samsung’s One UI 7, extending its accessibility features. Auracast, initially detected in the Android 16 code during developer previews last year, aims to revolutionize how audio is consumed in public spaces.

This technology facilitates access to audio streams in environments like airports, museums, or classrooms, ensuring that individuals who rely on hearing aids can receive important announcements or guided tours without the interference of background noise. The integration of Auracast utilizes the Bluetooth protocol to link LE Audio-compatible hearing aids with supported Android devices. Users will need hearing aids from brands like GN Hearing and Starkey that are compatible with LE Audio to take advantage of this feature. Additionally, broadcast audio support is now rolling out with the Android 16 Beta 3.

This feature enables users to stream audio from their devices to an unlimited number of receivers, including speakers, earbuds, headphones, and hearing aids. While similar features like Samsung’s Dual Audio previously existed, Auracast significantly expands the potential broadcasting targets from two to virtually limitless. Unlike multipoint audio, which switches between devices, broadcast audio delivers the same sound to all connected devices at the same time. To facilitate connection to broadcast audio streams, Google aims to simplify the user experience.

It has partnered with the Bluetooth Special Interests Group (SIG) to introduce standardized QR codes, enabling quick connections without needing to navigate through device settings. This collaboration, particularly with Samsung, is instrumental in ensuring a smooth rollout for Android 15 users, especially as new devices join the One UI 7 beta program.
