The Google Messages beta has revealed a potential new feature called “join via link,” which could allow users to join group chats using a URL. This feature, along with several other changes, highlights Google’s efforts to enhance the messaging app’s functionality. Notably, a card-style design has been introduced for selecting contacts within the message forwarding menu, making the interface more visually appealing.
The beta version of Google Messages (20250311_01_RC00) includes signs of the new “join via link” activity, although it is not yet functional. According to Android Authority, while there is no explicit description of this feature, it is likely intended to simplify joining group chats by using a link. This would be a significant improvement over the current process, which requires users to add participants manually.
In addition, a new pencil icon has been identified on the group info page, which probably allows users to change the group’s display image. Google has been exploring this option since December, and it appears that progress is being made toward implementation. Other changes visible in the beta include a redesign of the message forwarding menu, now featuring a card-style layout for contact selection.
Users will see frequently contacted individuals listed under Recent Conversations, followed by an alphabetical list of contacts, enhancing organization and ease of access. Moreover, the profile info page is set to adopt system colors for the icons located beneath the contact image. Lastly, the beta introduces a feature that allows users to report GIFs directly.
By long-pressing any GIF in the app, users will have the option to report inappropriate content. While there are no guarantees that these features will be rolled out in the stable version of Messages soon, their potential significance makes them worth watching in upcoming updates.
