Google Plans Card-Style Redesign for Android 16’s Settings Sub-Menus

Android 16 Beta 3 is introducing a revamped Settings menu, enhancing the user interface with Material You-themed cards that better differentiate sub-menu items. This alteration not only improves visual separation but also aids navigation by extending the design seen in Android 15’s Settings home screen.

One of the notable features of the redesign is the addition of arrow icons, which indicate the presence of sub-pages. Furthermore, toggles that are disabled now display an ‘X,’ serving as a clear visual cue for better user comprehension.

The new layout positions sub-menu headers at the top of the screen, optimizing screen space and making more settings immediately visible. This marks a significant upgrade from the less efficient header placement in Android 15.

Google has remained true to its commitment to Android 16’s development timeline. The company announced that the operating system would reach Platform Stability in March 2025.

Following the release of Beta 1 in January and Beta 2 in February, Beta 3 is the latest step in bringing Android 16 closer to stability. As this version was launched, many users are eager to explore the new features and what they might indicate for stable Android 16 or even Android 17.

Among the newly introduced features in Beta 3 is an accessibility enhancement designed for users with low vision, along with support for Auracast. This technology allows various compatible earbuds and hearing aids to share audio from a single source.

The new design aims to be more expressive and visually distinct, using curved boxes for sub-menu items and increasing the clarity of navigation. Additionally, the prominent placement of headers alongside the back arrow improves usability.

Although seeing these redesigned menus in the stable version of Android 16 would be a positive change, it appears likely that refinements may delay their inclusion until a future quarterly update.
