Google Unveils Major Redesign of Phone App, Transforming How Users Manage Incoming Calls

Google is currently testing a new left/right swipe gesture in its Phone app, aimed at enhancing the call answering and declining experience. This adjustment in the call screen design intends to make it easier for users to decline calls by balancing the interface’s button layout.

Alongside this change, Google has recently integrated features such as real-time scam detection and call filters, further enhancing the functionality of the Phone app. The stock Phone app on Google Pixel smartphones emphasizes simplicity with a user-friendly interface.

Despite being minimalistic, it has often been criticized for lacking some features that are standard in other dialer apps. However, this new call screen redesign indicates that Google is making strides in improving its Phone app and addressing user needs, even if the change wasn’t explicitly requested.

First discovered by Android Authority, this new feature is part of the beta version 166.0.735169223 of the Phone app. Previously, the method of answering calls involved swiping up and down — up to answer and down to reject.

The updated interface will shift to a left-right sliding gesture: swiping right to answer and left to decline calls. This change mirrors the call UI seen in various custom Android ROMs and resembles the swipe-right gesture used on Apple’s iPhone.

Personally, I find the new call screen design appealing. It simplifies the process of declining calls, as the current swipe down method can feel somewhat clunky with buttons positioned low on the screen.

The redesigned layout aims to create a more intuitive experience for users. While we haven’t yet seen this new UI on our devices, if Google proceeds with a broader rollout, it could significantly alter how Android users manage their calls, though the overall impact remains to be seen.
