You can now set ChatGPT as your default assistant on Android, replacing Gemini. This new feature allows for quick access to ChatGPT’s voice mode by either long-pressing the power button or swiping up from the corner of the screen. However, it’s important to note that ChatGPT for Android is limited in its capabilities compared to Gemini, as it cannot control system settings.
Google has been steadily enhancing Gemini, recently incorporating several features from its Advanced paid tier into the free version. Nevertheless, Gemini is not the only AI-powered chatbot available for Android users. Earlier this year, Perplexity released its Android app, offering users an alternative to Gemini.
Now, OpenAI’s ChatGPT is following suit, as the latest app update allows you to set it as the default assistant on your Android device. The introduction of this feature was first noted by Android Authority, highlighting the latest beta release of ChatGPT (v1.2025.070 beta). To set ChatGPT as your default assistant, simply go to Settings, then Apps, followed by Default apps, and select Digital assistant app.
Choose ChatGPT instead of Google, effectively replacing Gemini with OpenAI’s assistant. Once set, you can activate ChatGPT’s voice mode by long-pressing the power button or swiping from the screen’s corner. Though it may be more advantageous in certain scenarios, ChatGPT does come with limitations on Android.
For instance, it can’t control Google Home devices, alter system settings, or handle tasks such as managing Spotify playback or Google Calendar entries. Furthermore, even after replacing Gemini or Google Assistant, you won’t be able to trigger ChatGPT with a hotword like “Hey, Google.” Although these constraints exist, if you prefer ChatGPT, you can now enjoy it as your default assistant.
Since this feature is newly rolled out in the beta channel, future updates from OpenAI may address some of these limitations. If you’re not part of the beta test group, you can sideload the APK from APKMirror.
