The Solution is Here for Your Malfunctioning Chromecast

Google has announced a fix for older Chromecasts that have been experiencing significant glitches. The company advises users to keep their devices connected to Wi-Fi to facilitate a smooth update process. Many second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio users faced disruptions, resulting in their devices becoming inoperable for several days.

This issue is believed to be linked to an expired Chromecast certificate. For those who attempted to resolve the problem by resetting their devices, Google has stated that a comprehensive solution is still being developed. Although there haven’t been any immediate confirmations of a fix on the Google Nest Community forum, reports from 9to5Google indicate that Google began rolling out the solution in phases starting Thursday morning.

Users can expect the update to take several days to deploy fully. Over the weekend, many older Chromecast and Chromecast Audio models encountered an ‘Untrusted device’ error, which rendered them unable to cast audio or video. While Google has identified the cause of these disruptions, it hasn’t disclosed specific details about the issue.

Speculation arose that the problems were due to an expired embedded certificate, aligning with the first reports of disturbances on March 9. Some users have expressed concerns that Google might be intentionally phasing out these older devices, especially after the company officially discontinued the Chromecast line last year when it introduced the Google TV Streamer. This theory gained traction as the problems persisted.

Although the devices from Google’s 2015 lineup are still capable of displaying time, screensavers, and weather updates, their primary functionality for casting audio and video has been compromised. In contrast, newer models, starting from the third generation, remain unaffected by these recent issues.
