Google Messages beta is on the verge of introducing a long-anticipated feature: remote message deletion, similar to what leading chat applications offer. This new option will come with a 15-minute time limit, allowing users to erase text messages not just from their own devices, but from the recipient’s as well. The interface for remote deletion will be designed to resemble those of competing apps, making it user-friendly for those accustomed to multiple messaging platforms. This development is made possible by recent enhancements to the RCS (Rich Communication Services) protocol, which has already revolutionized SMS by facilitating better functionality and interoperability between iPhone and Android devices.
Currently, Google Messages stands alone as the company’s only app supporting RCS. This upgrade has introduced several useful features that enhance the SMS experience, including read receipts, typing indicators, and improved media sharing capabilities. Insider information from popular Google app researcher @AssembleDebug indicates that the beta version 20250317_01_RC00 includes the functionalities necessary for remotely deleting text messages. Up until this point, deleting messages in Google Messages removed them only for the sender, leaving the original recipients with the messages intact.
The new remote deletion feature will function similarly to “Delete for Everyone” in instant messaging apps like WhatsApp, allowing senders to retract their messages even after they have been sent. It’s worth noting that users of older app versions might not be able to utilize this feature. When opting for deletion, users will see choices to “Delete for me” or “Delete for everyone.” However, the latter requires compliance with the latest RCS Universal Profile.
Additionally, you will have a brief window of 15 minutes to change your mind after sending a message, which makes this feature even more practical. There is no official timeline for the rollout, but it is anticipated to be sooner rather than later.
