Plex has announced significant changes to its service, starting April 29th, that will impact both subscription fees and features. One of the most notable updates is the requirement for a Plex Pass subscription to use remote playback. This means that unless you’re streaming from a local network, you’ll need to have a paid subscription to access your library remotely.
For those who rely on shared servers, if the server owner does not subscribe to Plex Pass, users will have the option to purchase a Remote Watch Pass for $2 per month or $20 per year, enabling remote streaming. In addition to the remote playback changes, Plex is also raising the prices of its Plex Pass subscriptions. As of April 29th, the new monthly rate will be $7, an increase from $5, while annual subscriptions will rise to $70 from $40.
The lifetime subscription will see a substantial hike, going from $120 to $250. Despite these increases, users can still lock in the current pricing for annual and lifetime plans until the end of April. For users looking to save money, the best option remains the lifetime subscription at the old price of $120.
However, there is some positive news accompanying these changes: the elimination of mobile unlock fees. Previously, users had to pay a fee for streaming on Android or iOS devices, which limited playback to 60 seconds unless they subscribed to Plex Pass. With the upcoming redesign of the Plex mobile app, these fees will be removed, making the transition to the new pricing model slightly more palatable for customers.
Overall, these changes mark a significant shift in Plex’s service and pricing structure that may leave many users seeking alternative solutions.
