Verizon has announced the launch of satellite texting for select Android devices, specifically the Pixel 9 and Galaxy S25. This feature allows users to send text messages to any U.S. phone number while outside cellular coverage.
The rollout is expected to occur over the next two weeks and is part of Verizon’s ongoing partnership with Skylo, which focuses on non-terrestrial network communications. This initiative is notable for offering potential access to all subscribers, in contrast to T-Mobile’s plan which is tiered for premium customers.
For over a year, Verizon has been developing a dedicated satellite connectivity network with the same company that aided Google in providing satellite support for the Pixel 9. This collaboration primarily aimed at enhancing Emergency SOS capabilities, setting the stage for broader functionalities like the satellite messaging announced recently.
While details about the service remain somewhat sparse, Verizon has confirmed that the capability is being rolled out to users with compatible devices. However, it may take up to two weeks for the functionality to be fully deployed for all users.
Unlike T-Mobile’s approach, which limits its satellite features based on plan types post-July, Verizon’s offering appears to be available to all customers on its network who own compatible devices. Additional insights were shared during Google’s recent March Pixel Feature Drop, which highlighted Verizon’s support for satellite messaging in the Pixel 9 series.
It’s important to note that connection quality may vary based on location and environmental factors. Furthermore, this service does not support voice, video, group messaging, media attachments, emojis, or encryption.
Always ensure that you are outdoors and have a line of sight to the satellite for optimal functionality; service may be limited in specific areas, such as parts of Alaska.
