WhatsApp is set to introduce a new feature that allows users to create photo collages for their status updates, borrowing from Instagram’s Layout functionality. Although the feature is currently not available, it promises to let users compile up to six photos using various grid options. This addition aims to tackle the problem of cluttered ‘chain stories,’ enabling a more organized way to share multiple photos within a single status update.
The status and story update format has gained immense popularity across social media platforms since Snapchat first introduced it in 2013. Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and now WhatsApp have incorporated this storytelling style, enhancing user engagement. To further refine its status updates, WhatsApp is adopting Instagram’s Layout feature, which has been available on its platform since 2019.
According to reports from Android Authority, the feature is under development and is expected to be manually activated in the WhatsApp Messenger beta version 2.25.8.5. Once live, users will be able to create collages directly from the Status Update interface, selecting up to six photos at a time and choosing from various grid layouts. The new collage feature aims to resolve the issues associated with chain stories, where users often post multiple status updates one after another to convey a single thought.
While it is yet to be implemented, the process seems straightforward: users will navigate to the Updates tab, tap on Add Status, and the new Layout option will appear, allowing for album-style sharing. Currently, the feature remains in development, and details regarding its final implementation and how these collages will appear to viewers are still unclear. However, when it goes live, it could significantly enhance the way users express their moments on WhatsApp.
