WhatsApp is enhancing its Status Update feature by introducing music integration that allows direct sharing from Spotify, similar to what Instagram offers. Soon, users will be able to share Spotify songs directly to their WhatsApp Status.
This will include visually engaging previews that display the cover art, song titles, and a ‘Play on Spotify’ button, with customizable background colors. The initial rollout seems to focus solely on Spotify; however, there is potential for WhatsApp to collaborate with other music streaming services like YouTube Music and Apple Music in the future.
Meta-owned WhatsApp began experimenting with this music integration in October 2024. The feature resembles a strategy borrowed from Instagram, enabling users to add popular songs as background music for their Status Updates.
WhatsApp users could leverage Meta’s existing agreement with Universal Music to incorporate tracks from its extensive catalog. Yet, while Instagram allows users to share songs as story updates directly from music streaming platforms, this capability appears to be delaying WhatsApp’s rollout of its music integration.
A recent exploration by WABetaInfo into WhatsApp Messenger’s beta version suggests that users might eventually be able to share music from third-party streaming services, starting with Spotify. As it stands, when users wish to share a song from Spotify to WhatsApp, they currently can only send a rich link to a contact.
However, WhatsApp seems to be in the process of adding a dedicated Status Update icon within Spotify’s share menu. This new feature will generate a preview showcasing the song or album’s cover art along with the associated song and artist names.
Additionally, users will have four customizable background colors drawn from the dominant colors of the cover art. Meanwhile, viewers of the Status Update will have the option to select ‘Play on Spotify’.
The future inclusion of other streaming services like YouTube Music and Apple Music remains uncertain but is possible.
