Google has initiated legal action against a group of scammers responsible for creating and selling more than 10,000 fake business listings on Google Maps. These fraudulent listings primarily targeted vulnerable individuals in urgent situations, such as those needing emergency locksmiths, plumbers, or roadside assistance.
The scammers employed deceptive tactics including “bait and switch” methods, call interception, and fake reviews to mislead users and overcharge them. The tech giant is proactively addressing fraud in its platform by removing millions of false listings and committing to safeguarding users.
Google has pledged to donate any damages it may receive from this lawsuit to organizations focused on combating scams. This determination reflects Google’s broader strategy to crack down on fraudulent activities while providing users with reliable navigation services.
As one of the most widely used navigation apps, Google Maps has amassed over 10 billion downloads on the Play Store and enjoys a user base of over 2 billion monthly active users. In addition to navigation, the app offers features such as local business discovery and user reviews, making it an essential tool for many.
The rise of fake listings has emerged as a significant concern for users. The scammers not only created illegitimate business profiles but also utilized “lead generation services” to divert calls from real businesses, thereby tricking unsuspecting customers into paying inflated prices.
Google’s efforts to combat these fraudulent operations have intensified, especially after a Texas company reported a locksmith impersonation incident. As part of its ongoing efforts to address the issue, Google has developed an algorithm designed to detect fake listings and spam more effectively.
According to Halimah DeLaine Prado, Google’s general counsel, the company is committed to identifying and eliminating these fraudulent listings as swiftly as possible. In 2023, Google Maps removed approximately 12 million fake business profiles, showcasing its dedication to ensuring a safe user experience.
