Google Messages is currently testing a new media forwarding shortcut that resembles the functionality found in WhatsApp. This feature aims to simplify the process of sharing media within conversations, enhancing the overall user experience. In addition to this shortcut, Google is exploring several other WhatsApp-inspired improvements for its messaging app, reflecting a commitment to continually enhance its services.
Despite these updates, Google Messages still has a long way to go before it can compete with established messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Messenger, and Telegram. These apps are known for their user-friendly interfaces, which facilitate the creation of large group chats, seamless media sharing across multiple conversations, and the option to share temporary updates via Stories. By introducing a media forwarding shortcut, Google appears poised to adopt successful features from WhatsApp to improve its messaging experience.
According to Android Authority, the new forwarding shortcut will feature a double-arrow icon next to shared media. Tapping this icon will present users with a list of conversations, allowing them to forward images and videos easily. The functionality will also enable users to select and send multiple media files simultaneously, streamlining the process significantly compared to the current method.
At present, forwarding media in Google Messages involves multiple steps, making it cumbersome. Users must open the shared media, tap the share icon, select Google Messages, and then choose the desired conversation. This is a tedious process that the new shortcut aims to eliminate.
Additionally, Google is evaluating other enhancements for Messages, including the ability to delete sent text messages within 15 minutes, akin to WhatsApp’s feature. Another potential improvement is the incorporation of an “@mention” feature in group chats, allowing users to directly address specific individuals, something that is standard in other messaging apps but currently lacking in Google Messages.
