Redesigned Google Family Link App Highlights Screen-Time Controls for Better Parental Management

Google has recently updated its Family Link app on Android, significantly enhancing screen time management for parents. The introduction of a new Screen Time tab consolidates essential controls into one easily accessible location, replacing the previous “Highlights” tab.

The revamped Controls tab features a modern Material You design and includes quick-action buttons for functions like app approvals, site blocking, and data adjustments. While Family Link may not receive widespread recognition, it remains a reliable tool for parents looking to regulate their children’s device usage without being intrusive.

If you’ve yet to explore this feature, now is the perfect time, as the Android version has undergone a significant facelift, making it more user-friendly and visually appealing. In February, the initial glimpse of this redesign was shared, focusing on making crucial screen time management tools highly visible.

The new Screen Time tab not only centralizes controls but also offers a summary card at the top. This card displays daily device usage and highlights which apps consume the most time.

Tapping on it unveils comprehensive usage statistics. Below, users will find distinct sections for the child’s device, complete with a quick ‘Lock’ button, as well as time limits and schedules.

This update is a natural progression for Family Link, building on improvements made during the pandemic that allowed parents to gain a clearer view of their children’s app usage. The Controls tab has also received a fresh makeover, featuring easy-to-identify links for key settings across Google services.

For families with multiple children, the update introduces a convenient slider in the top-left corner, allowing for quick profile switching without needing to navigate away from the current page. Moreover, the new Location tab incorporates an upgraded map design for improved device tracking.

According to reports, the redesign is now part of Family Link version 2.47 on Android, while iOS users are still waiting for the update.
