Android Auto 14 has begun its stable rollout, introducing features that build upon earlier beta releases, including improved temperature controls. A key aspect of this update is its strong indication of the forthcoming integration of Google’s Gemini AI, which is poised to replace Google Assistant in vehicles. Evidence from code strings and image assets in the latest build suggests that the transition to Gemini is imminent, even though it is not yet live in the current version.
This update not only enhances vehicle system controls but also prepares users for the anticipated shift from Google Assistant to Gemini, as outlined in Google’s recent announcements. The company plans to completely phase out Google Assistant this year, and the new Android Auto build provides tangible signs of this transition. The arrival of Gemini in Android Auto has been expected for some time.
Clues about this integration surfaced as early as January and continued to accumulate before the stable release of Android Auto 14. Recent findings by tech analysts have brought further confirmation of Gemini’s arrival, suggesting it may occur sooner than initially anticipated. The code strings found in the update further substantiate the notion that Google Assistant will soon be replaced, with one code indicating, “Gemini is now the personal AI assistant in your car.”
Although Gemini is not yet functioning in the current stable version, its appearance is evident. Similar to its functionality on mobile devices, Gemini will feature a distinctive blue and purple hue at the bottom edge of the screen to signal when it is listening or responding. Furthermore, a new shortcut icon for Gemini will occupy the space previously held by Google Assistant on the in-vehicle display.
Tapping this icon will activate the Gemini Live feature, marking a significant change in user interface for Android Auto users.
