Modretro’s Chromatic is introducing two exciting new physical Game Boy titles: Hermano and Chantey, both priced at an accessible $40. Hermano is a platformer funded through Kickstarter, now available through Modretro with a unique feature—a glowing cartridge that adds to its appeal. Chantey offers a refreshing rhythm-based gameplay experience on the Game Boy, filling a notable gap in the platform’s genre offerings. Earlier this month, we heralded the arrival of these two new titles, which have been revitalized by Modretro, the publisher responsible for the Chromatic handheld console designed to enhance the Game Boy Color experience.
With the launch of Hermano and Chantey, pre-orders have begun shipping, along with new orders, marking an exciting moment for Game Boy fans. Hermano, successfully funded in 2023 by the Pat Morita Team, had limited physical copies available directly on their website. The excitement over Modretro acquiring the publishing rights in the U.S. allowed for broader access. Since its pre-order availability in November 2024, Hermano has officially launched today, with an attractive price point and the added allure of a glow-in-the-dark cartridge.
Feedback for Hermano has been positive, and as an owner of both the Kickstarter and Modretro versions, I can vouch for its quality—it stands out as one of the best indie platformers on the system. Chantey is an innovative title for Game Boy and Color, also available for $40. It has been filling a niche in rhythm gaming since its pre-order announcement in October 2024. The graphics are inviting, and the premise of tapping along to pirate sea chanteys wrapped in heavy metal themes makes it an intriguing addition to the library.
Both Hermano and Chantey can currently be purchased and shipped directly from Modretro’s website. While other games from Modretro may be available through Gamestop, there are no plans at this time for these new titles to reach that platform, ensuring that orders placed now will arrive in due time from Modretro.
