Google Discover Tests New Feed Design That Many Users Find Unappealing

Google Discover is currently testing a new full-width layout aimed at transforming the traditional card-based design. This redesign eliminates the familiar curved-edge cards and margins, resulting in article images that span across the entire screen.

While some users express concerns about the shift potentially affecting the visual context of images, debate continues regarding its aesthetic appeal and alignment with the Material 3 design principles. For many Android users, the Discover Feed is a primary source of daily information, providing updates on finance, sports, and weather right after checking notifications.

Positioned conveniently on the left panel of the home screen or accessed through the Google app, it delivers a curated selection of articles personalized based on the user’s Google account data, including search and browsing history. Google had recently introduced a series of design enhancements that were well-received, such as the removal of horizontal dividers between articles and restructured article cards featuring better integration of titles and images.

However, the latest change represents a significant visual shift, moving away from the previously successful card layout. The new full-width layout stretches featured article images across the screen, which some initially mistook for a bug.

As the rollout continues across various Android devices, many users, including those on the latest Google app version, are still waiting to see if the change will reach them. By shifting away from the original layout, the redesigned interface removes the curved edge cards and continuity between titles and headers, resulting in a jarring visual flow.
