Upcoming Google TV devices will feature a new dedicated button that provides quick access to Free TV, enabling users to enjoy 150 ad-supported television channels effortlessly. This change aims to enhance user experience, making it substantially easier for individuals in the U.S. to stream live content. In recent developments, Google has announced that every new Google TV device will now come standard with a button specifically for launching Free TV or Live TV.
This initiative was communicated to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) about a year ago, allowing ample time to adjust their remote designs for the upcoming generation of Google TV devices. The goal behind this button is to create a unified and accessible experience across all Google TV platforms, streamlining the way users access free live content. Google’s Freeplay service, which was launched last year, gives streamers instant access to 150 free, ad-supported TV channels, featuring options such as BBC Earth, Court TV, national news networks, and Hallmark Movies.
This service requires no third-party apps or subscriptions, making it particularly user-friendly. Currently, these channels are available exclusively in the United States and can be found in the “Live” tab on the Google TV home screen. With the introduction of the dedicated remote button, users can quickly access these channels without having to sift through various menus.
For regions where Freeplay isn’t available, the button will connect users to live TV guides provided by OEM partners, which may involve subscription fees. Despite this, the functionality of the button remains valuable. As Google positions itself as a key player in the entertainment sector, the new button is expected to enhance the visibility of free live TV on its platforms, with the rollout of this feature anticipated in the next wave of devices.
