Samsung Introduces Google Gemini’s Project Astra Mode for Galaxy S25 Series Smartphones

Gemini Live’s live-video feature is now expanding to a broader range of Android devices, with the latest update rolling out to the Galaxy S25 series. Initial testing has shown that the live video function operates on a snapshot basis, resembling Google Lens in its conversational style rather than providing continuous analysis.

Samsung has confirmed that this feature will be available to all S25 series users without any additional cost. The real-time camera feed analysis capabilities of Google Gemini Live, which builds on features introduced in Project Astra during I/O 2024, have recently started becoming available on more Android devices.

Initially launched on select devices about two weeks ago, the feature began to roll out to Pixel users by late last week and is now being introduced to Samsung’s flagship models. For Galaxy S25 users, the “Real-Time Visual AI” functionality is accessible without needing a Gemini Advanced subscription.

However, it remains unclear if this means that all users can access it for free or if it is simply included as part of a promotional offer for new devices. In my experience, the functionality has been successfully activated on a Gemini Advanced subscription account, while my free account has not yet showcased the new feature.

The tool operates similarly to Google Lens but integrates a conversational assistant. Despite its benefits, current implementations appear inconsistent, feeling like a mix of various technologies.

During testing, the live video mode did not provide continuous analysis; instead, it appeared to take snapshots at the moment a query is issued. For instance, when asked to count fingers, the tool based its response on a snapshot rather than continuously processing the video feed.

In other scenarios, such as while in a moving vehicle, it could analyze the surroundings, albeit with inaccuracies in street names. This raises speculation that the AI may pull information from Google Maps in dynamic environments.

Google plans to extend this functionality to Android devices running version 10 and above in the near future.
