Reddit Answers integrates Gemini, reviving the beloved Google Search feature for users.

Reddit has recently shifted its approach by integrating Google’s Gemini into its Reddit Answers feature. Initially, the platform had promoted its own AI search tool, attempting to distance itself from Google, especially as the tech giant moved away from relying on Reddit to source information. The integration of Gemini via Google’s Vertex AI is expected to enhance the relevance and quality of search results, providing users with curated summaries and links to community discussions.

This change aims to encourage users to remain on the platform longer. Reddit Answers seeks to filter responses based on authentic human experiences and insights from the community. This focus stands in contrast to the SEO-driven results typically associated with traditional search engines.

In a surprising turn, Reddit, which previously advocated for users to utilize its proprietary conversational AI, now embraces Gemini to enhance its search capabilities. Moreover, this integration signifies a notable shift as Google had previously distanced Gemini from Reddit, reducing the platform’s importance in sourcing information for user queries. Now, by incorporating Gemini, both companies find themselves closer than ever.

Announced through a blog post by Google Cloud, the move is set to help Reddit’s AI assistant provide more accurate and relevant content. Currently, Reddit Answers is in beta, available exclusively to iOS and web users in the US and Canada. Logged-in users can ask up to 20 questions per day, while logged-out visitors are limited to 10 questions per week.

Premium users have an enhanced limit of 100 daily questions. By utilizing Gemini, Reddit Answers could become a valuable resource for those seeking insights rooted in real community experiences, presenting perspectives that traditional search engines may overlook.
