Samsung was a pioneer in integrating an under-display camera (UDC) with the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 3, providing a seamless viewing experience by eliminating the need for visible cutouts for selfies. Initial leaks indicate that the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 will maintain this innovative feature. However, there are concerns that Samsung might phase out UDC technology in subsequent models due to challenges associated with cost and quality. As we look ahead, it’s speculated that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 may revert to a conventional punch-hole camera design instead of continuing with the hidden UDC.
This change would represent a shift back to a more traditional smartphone design, as many users find notches and cutouts distracting, particularly during activities such as streaming videos. While the UDC offers a solution by concealing the camera beneath the display, Samsung’s continued use of this technology will depend on its feasibility moving forward. While there have been discussions about the incorporation of UDC in future Galaxy S series phones, it’s unlikely we will see this within the next few years. Reports suggest that Samsung might completely abandon UDC technology after the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
A prominent leaker, yeux1122, has noted that the company struggles to achieve better cost-effectiveness and performance with the UDC, which could lead to a return to traditional camera placements. Interestingly, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition released last year showcased a standard camera, hinting that Samsung is not against reverting to previous designs if necessary. Despite a March leak suggesting improvements to the UDC for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, caution is advised, as the credibility of leaks can vary. Nonetheless, this particular information aligns with other insights, suggesting that Samsung’s strategy around UDC may soon be revisited.
