Google Messages is undergoing a redesign that features a more muted and less colorful user interface. This update includes several noteworthy changes, such as rounded elements in chat windows and pill-shaped labels in menus. The new themes may also feature less saturated colors, which represents a significant shift from the current vibrant design.
According to recent findings from an APK teardown, there is evidence of these changes in the Google Messages v20250408 beta version. The most striking aspect of the new interface is the reduction in color vibrancy, with chat backgrounds adopting more subdued hues. The attachment menu, where users can add photos, files, and stickers, is now entirely monochrome, a dramatic departure from the previous multi-colored setup.
Additionally, several user interface components have received a softer, rounder aesthetic. For instance, the chat bubbles now exhibit rounded corners, and features such as tab labels and search bars within the emoji section have been redesigned to appear pill-shaped. While some users may appreciate the overall redesign, opinions on the diminished color palette may vary.
Personally, the changes are mostly favorable, except for the less colorful themes. As of now, this new look is not yet available to the public. However, the underlying code is active in the beta version, indicating that these changes may not be final.
There remains the possibility that the design could be altered or even abandoned before it becomes widely accessible on smartphones.
