Google’s latest update delivers essential security enhancements for your Pixel device.

Last month’s Pixel update marked the conclusion of the Feature Drop for Android 15, complemented by the March 2025 firmware updates for Gemini, Gboard, and more. As we anticipate the next quarterly release featuring Android 16, we don’t expect significant changes in the interim security patches. However, the April 2025 Android Security Bulletin does present critical fixes for two zero-day exploits, making this update significant for Google Pixel users. The first of the two zero-days addressed, designated CVE-2024-53197, was actively exploited to compromise a student activist’s phone in Serbia, reportedly using tools from Cellebrite, a phone data extraction company.

This vulnerability affected a vital Android USB function and posed a risk to billions of devices prior to this update. The second vulnerability, CVE-2024-53150, was also patched, although Google provided limited details about its exploitation, noting that it pertained to USB components in the upstream kernel. Both vulnerabilities received a high severity rating in the April 2025 Android Security Bulletin, one tier below the maximum designation for CVEs. Interestingly, Google also identified four vulnerabilities rated as “Critical,” but there is no evidence suggesting they have been actively exploited.

In addition to the Android patches, Google’s Pixel-specific security bulletin announced fixes for three CVEs that are exclusive to its devices. Among these were two high-severity vulnerabilities in connectivity components and one critical vulnerability associated with Google Assistant. However, details surrounding these vulnerabilities remain undisclosed. Beyond security, the April 2025 update also resolves several bugs for Google Pixel users.

Issues with the fingerprint scanner, camera stability during zoom, overlapping elements on the lock screen, and screen brightness flickering in video applications have all been addressed. The update will roll out gradually to all Google Pixel devices, from the Pixel 6 to the newly launched Pixel 9a, beginning today and continuing over the next week. Users can check for updates in their device’s settings.
