US Grants Tariff Exemptions on Electronics and Other Products Imported from China

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has announced temporary exemptions from tariffs on electronics, including smartphones and computers imported from China. This decision provides relief to major smartphone manufacturers, such as Apple and OnePlus, which heavily depend on Chinese production. In contrast, companies like Google and Samsung are less affected, as their products are manufactured in various countries beyond China.

Recent weeks have highlighted the volatility of the economy, particularly as anticipation built around the introduction of US tariffs on Chinese goods. Many consumers rushed to purchase new electronics to avoid potential price hikes. The CBP’s announcement of tariff exemptions for several product categories—including flash drives, memory cards, solar panels, semiconductors, and television displays—has eased some of that concern.

These exemptions apply to products departing warehouses on or after April 5, 2025. The CBP shared a list detailing 20 tariff codes associated with exempted products. While tracking these codes might be challenging, individuals can reference the Harmonized Tariff Schedule for clarification.

For example, the code 8517.13.00 refers specifically to smartphones. Samsung and Google have shifted much of their production away from China to countries like Vietnam and India, allowing them to avoid significant impacts from the tariffs. Samsung emphasized that its television business would also remain unaffected, as most TVs sold in the U.S. are manufactured in Mexico.

In contrast, companies such as Apple and OnePlus face greater challenges, with more than half of Apple’s computers and around 80% of iPads sourced from China. The newly announced exemptions will eliminate the 125% tariff on the specified product categories, while a 10% tariff on goods from other nations remains. However, a separate 20% tariff on all Chinese goods persists.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that these tariff exemptions are temporary and emphasized the need to reshore semiconductor production to reduce reliance on Southeast Asia. He highlighted the importance of having essential components like chips and flat panels manufactured in the U.S.
