Users are increasingly testing the limits of smartwatch capabilities by installing games such as Asphalt 8 and Grand Theft Auto using PSP emulators. While gaming on smartwatches is not common, it is possible; some players have successfully run games using ADB commands. For instance, Asphalt 8 has been noted to run smoothly on a Galaxy Watch Ultra, where gyro controls add an engaging element to the gameplay.
Smartwatches are not typically known for having high-end internals due to their focus on sensors and health-tracking features. Therefore, most available apps tend to revolve around fitness and health monitoring. Nonetheless, there are a handful of games that users can access, though these titles are quite limited.
Despite this, adventurous users often push the boundaries of their devices. A notable example includes a Reddit user who managed to run Asphalt 8 on a Galaxy Watch. Earlier this year, another Redditor successfully unlocked a Galaxy Watch 5 to run games like GTA and God of War via a sideloaded PSP emulator.
While these devices have enough storage for games, the round displays can detract from the gaming experience. However, the challenge did not deter others from attempting similar feats. Installing Asphalt 8 on the Samsung Galaxy Watch was a relatively easy process, requiring only the enabling of ADB and sideloading the appropriate APK.
The controls and user interface adapted well to the smartwatch display, enhancing the overall experience. Notably, the user selected the version of Asphalt that employs gyro controls, removing the need for on-screen buttons. Although some input latency was expected given the limited processing power, the game performed adequately, with the watch only becoming slightly warm during extended play.
This experimentation demonstrates that, with the right effort, developers could create enjoyable gaming experiences for smartwatches—potentially reviving older PC and Android titles for wearable devices.
