The Quick Share feature for Android, which allows users to share files locally without needing an internet connection, is set to receive a significant redesign. A recent APK teardown has indicated that Google Play Services version 25.15.31 beta contains code suggesting changes to both the appearance and functionality of this feature. The revamped Quick Share interface will introduce a modern aesthetic, but it will also alter how users interact with file sharing.
Traditionally, users could choose who could send them files—options included their own devices, contacts, or anyone nearby. The new design changes this by displaying the user’s receiving device to everyone in proximity who has Quick Share open in the Send interface. For example, it will show as “Taylor’s Pixel 9 Pro” to those around ready to send files.
However, users’ profile pictures will only be visible to individuals saved in their contacts. This redesign is speculated to reflect elements of Material Design 3, which is anticipated to launch at Google I/O next month. Observers are keen to see if this aligns with the overall design updates that will be presented during the event.
While this new version of Quick Share is not yet available for public use, a developer known as AssembleDebug was able to activate it using the latest beta version of Google Play Services. If Material Design 3 is indeed introduced at Google I/O, the official rollout of the redesigned Quick Share interface may occur within weeks. Additionally, an update earlier this week allowed users to see file previews on the receiving end, enabling better control over which files they choose to accept during Quick Share interactions.
